Bangladesh HC refuses to ban ISKCON

The Bangladesh government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has withdrawn the case against the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) following widespread protests over the arrest of Hindu monk Prabhu Chinmoy Krishna Das. Protests erupted across the country after Das was detained on charges of sedition.

On Thursday, November 28, the High Court acknowledged that the government had taken appropriate steps in addressing both the ISKCON issue and the recent murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chittagong.

However, the court urged the authorities to remain cautious to prevent further harm amidst rising tensions. It also expressed concern over the government’s handling of the situation and emphasized the need for citizens to remain peaceful and tolerant.

Das, a prominent leader in Bangladesh’s Hindu community, was arrested earlier this week on allegations of insulting the national flag during a protest by raising a flag above the Bangladesh flag.

However, the individual who initially filed the sedition charges has since withdrawn them, raising questions about the motivations behind his arrest.

The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das sparked protests across the nation, with large crowds of Hindu demonstrators gathering in several cities.

The unrest intensified after the Chittagong court denied Das bail on Tuesday and sent him to jail.

The protests turned violent when police opened fire on a crowd of Hindu protesters outside the Chittagong court, resulting in the death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

As tensions continue to simmer, the court’s call for peace and tolerance highlights the growing concerns over the potential for further violence, urging the government to handle the situation with care.
