Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal clash as Delhi polls heat up

In a fresh political showdown, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of corruption, including his alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor scam and the lavish renovation of his official residence, dubbed as “Sheesh Mahal.”

Rahul Gandhi’s sharp criticism of Kejriwal

Speaking at a rally in Patparganj, a constituency formerly represented by ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Gandhi accused Kejriwal of abandoning Delhi’s poor during the 2020 riots and labeled Sisodia as the “architect of the liquor scam.” His remarks directly echoed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) long-standing accusations against the Delhi CM.

Kejriwal hits back, questions Congress-BJP “understanding”

Within hours, Kejriwal responded on X (formerly Twitter), calling out Rahul Gandhi for allegedly repeating BJP’s talking points. “Why are you silent on ‘Raj Mahal‘ and repeating BJP’s speech? What deal has been struck between BJP and Congress?” Kejriwal asked.

He further escalated the attack, questioning why Gandhi and his family had not been arrested in the National Herald case, which is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). “Modiji jails people even on fake cases like the liquor scam. Why have you and your family not been arrested in an open-and-shut case like the National Herald? How did Robert Vadra get a clean chit from the BJP?” he added.

BJP welcomes the feud, calls it a credibility crisis

The escalating war of words between the former allies has been music to the ears of the BJP, which has been highlighting the irony of AAP and Congress tearing into each other after fighting the Lok Sabha elections together in Delhi.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla mocked both parties, stating, “A few months ago, Kejriwal and Gandhi were allies vowing to defeat Modi. At that time, Gandhi didn’t see the liquor scam, and Kejriwal didn’t see the National Herald scam. Now, both are calling each other corrupt. What credibility do they have?”

Impact on Delhi elections

With the gloves off between Congress and AAP, BJP leaders believe that Gandhi’s aggressive campaign could hurt AAP’s vote bank, particularly in Muslim-majority constituencies where Congress is making a concerted effort to gain ground.

To counter this, AAP has sought the support of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leaders, and Kairana MP Iqra Hasan to ensure that the Muslim vote remains consolidated behind them.

The BJP is now positioning itself as the alternative to both parties, questioning the credibility of their alliance and highlighting their internal divisions just months after contesting the general elections together.

As the Delhi elections draw closer, the Congress-AAP rivalry is expected to intensify, with both parties battling for survival in the face of a resurgent BJP.
