Neelam Shinde’s family struggles to secure emergency travel amid medical crisis

The Indian government has formally reached out to the United States to expedite an urgent visa for the family of Neelam Shinde, a student from Satara, Maharashtra, who is battling for her life in an American hospital after sustaining critical injuries in a road accident, sources confirmed on Thursday.

Accident and medical emergency

The accident occurred on February 14, and authorities have arrested one person in connection with the incident. However, Shinde’s family only learned about the accident two days later through her roommate.

Ms. Shinde, a student at California State University, sustained multiple fractures and severe brain injuries after being hit from behind by a four-wheeler. She underwent emergency brain surgery but has remained in a coma ever since. The hospital has sought consent from family members for crucial medical decisions, making their presence urgent. Given the critical nature of her condition, the hospital in the US sent an urgent email to her family, requesting them to travel as soon as possible.

Family faces visa hurdles amid personal tragedy

Shinde’s family has been struggling to secure an emergency visa to travel to the US. Their efforts intensified after the recent death of Neelam’s mother, compounding their distress.

The family approached multiple government officials, including Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, former MP Shriniwas Patil, and former MLA Balasaheb Patil, seeking intervention. However, according to Shinde’s uncle, their attempts so far have been met with disappointment, as they have not received any concrete assistance.

Political leaders call for urgent action

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule has publicly urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to intervene and facilitate an emergency visa for Shinde’s father, who needs to travel urgently to be by his daughter’s side.

Tagging Jaishankar and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a tweet on Wednesday, Sule wrote:

Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. He has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance.”

Government steps in amid growing pressure

Following mounting requests, the Indian government has now contacted US authorities, urging them to expedite the visa process for Shinde’s family. Meanwhile, efforts are also being made to ensure she receives all necessary medical assistance during this critical period.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with many urging swift intervention to support the Shinde family during their time of crisis.
