Uttar Pradesh woman executed in UAE for alleged murder

Shahjadi Sabbeer Khan, a 30-year-old caregiver from Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, was executed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on February 15 after being sentenced to death for the alleged murder of a four-month-old infant. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Delhi High Court of her execution on Monday.

Family shocked, seeks government help to bring back her body

Shahjadi’s family, devastated by the news, said they would approach the Central government to request the repatriation of her body. They had petitioned the Delhi High Court for updates on her well-being, only to be informed of her execution during the hearing.

We were extremely shocked to learn about her execution, especially since we had spoken to her over the phone earlier on the same day,” the family stated.

Her father, Sabbeer Khan, had repeatedly sought help from the central and state governments, maintaining that she was falsely accused of the crime.

Imprisonment and death sentence

Shahjadi had been working as a caregiver in Abu Dhabi since 2021. In 2022, she was accused of murdering the infant she was caring for and was subsequently imprisoned at Al Wathba prison.

Her family intensified their efforts to seek her release after she informed them in September 2023 that her appeal had been rejected and that she could face execution at any time.

Allegations of false framing

The family blamed a man named Uzair, also known as Panna Chaudhary, from Agra, for misleading Shahjadi and allegedly framing her in the case. They claimed that Shahjadi met Uzair through social media while working with an NGO.

According to them, Uzair promised her a well-paying job at his uncle Faiz and aunt Nazia’s home in Abu Dhabi, assuring her that she could also receive treatment for her burn injuries there.

Events leading to her conviction

While working as a caregiver, Nazia gave birth to a child, who died at four months old in 2022. The family alleged that some months later, Faiz and Nazia accused Shahjadi of killing the infant and coerced her into confessing.

Despite repeated pleas from her family for assistance, no intervention was made, ultimately leading to her execution. The family is now seeking urgent government action to bring her remains back to India.
