A political earthquake to hit Maharashtra in the offing?
The next few weeks will be decisive, not only for the Thackerays but also for the future of regional politics in Maharashtra

Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena – Shinde and the Uddhav Thackeray predicament!!!

In the ever-fluctuating arena of Maharashtra politics, a new turn is unfolding, one that can reshape power equations not only in Mumbai but in the state as a whole. Word goes around in powerful political circles that the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena is considering a revolutionary step: issuing an invitation to Raj Thackeray to have his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) merge with Shiv Sena, and handing him the leadership of the merged party.

This new development, previously unconfirmed but long the subject of rumours, is timely as Uddhav Thackeray‘s Shiv Sena (UBT) is now poised for the September-October 2025 elections for numerous municipalities and purportedly negotiating very serious pre-alliance deals with Raj Thackeray’s party, MNS.

The calculated gambit of Shiv Sena Shinde camp

Reports indicate that the Shinde group is eager to revive the Shiv Sena’s past glory by regaining the Thackeray brand and magnetism, something it had lost when Uddhav Thackeray created the Shiv Sena (UBT) after the party split in 2022. Providing leadership to Raj Thackeray may be a masterstroke in strategy, consolidating the fractured saffron vote, recharging Marathi identity politics, and rebranding the party with a more robust, more culturally appealing image.

It is also viewed as a political move to directly marginalize Uddhav Thackeray, who has been gradually constructing an opposition platform in coalition with Congress and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction).

The Thackeray cousins: A tale of two paths

What adds complexity to the situation is that Raj and Uddhav Thackeray are themselves engaged in back-channel negotiations to fight municipal elections together as allies, rekindling hopes of a temporary ceasefire in the initial Thackeray family divide. A united MNS-Shiv Sena (UBT) front would be able to aggregate urban Marathi votes, particularly in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and Pune, areas where local concerns and regional pride drive the electoral agenda.

But if Raj opts for the Shinde-led proposal, it would be the kiss of death for this potential alliance and instead position him at the centre of a new political formation, one that might continue the Shiv Sena legacy under his leadership.

No confirmation, yet the speculation gains steam

No official word has yet been issued by any of the concerned parties. The Shinde faction is still tight-lipped, while MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) have neither confirmed nor refuted the surrounding rumours. Political analysts point out that in the politics of Maharashtra, rumours tend to precede realignments.

The timing of this speculative proposal is also worth noting, right before the local body elections, where alliances, symbolism, and control over Mumbai’s civic body, the BMC, carry enormous strategic importance.

What’s at stake?

For Raj Thackeray, becoming the leader of a merged Shiv Sena could be his long-awaited return to mainstream centrality, which his party has so far not managed to pull off in the last few years. It may endow him with the organisational depth and voting heft the MNS lacked since its first wave of momentum in 2009.

For Eknath Shinde, it would muffle the critics who say he hijacked the Sena sans its soul, enabling him to validate his leadership with a Thackeray face at the helm.

The Shinde-led Shiv Sena is showing signs of vulnerability, grappling with a leadership crisis rooted in the absence of a mass-appealing figure. While Eknath Shinde managed to project authority during his initial tenure as Chief Minister, that momentum now appears to be fading. The party’s energy on the ground is waning as the cadre lacks a charismatic face to rally behind.

In this context, a leader like Raj Thackeray, known for his oratory, cultural resonance, and street connect, could prove to be a game-changer. His entry could reignite enthusiasm within the party’s rank and file, further disrupt the BJP’s dominance in the state, especially among the Marathi manoos voter base.

Regardless of which way the equation tilts, an alliance with Uddhav or a merger with Shiv Sena Shinde, Raj Thackeray seems to be the man holding the political advantage at this juncture. His next move could reshape the state’s political narrative heading into the crucial 2025 municipal polls.

For Uddhav Thackeray, it would be a political shocker, losing the possibility of an alliance with his cousin and against a revitalized Shiv Sena with an original Thackeray in charge.

A political chessboard in flux

What the future holds is unclear. Will Raj opt to join Uddhav for a family-led electoral thrust? Or will he take up Shinde’s Sena offer and revive the Balasaheb-era Shiv Sena identity in a new guise?

For now, it’s a waiting game. No moves have been taken on record, but the rumours are getting louder. Maharashtra’s political chessboard is being reshaped. Pawns are shifting. Leadership is under threat, with a new game plan power axis could emerge soon.

One thing is certain: the next few weeks will be decisive, not only for the Thackerays but also for the future of regional politics in Maharashtra.
