Ram Rahim to face prosecution in three Guru Granth Sahib disrespect cases

The Supreme Court has made a significant decision today regarding Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a convicted rapist and leader of Dera Sacha Sauda. The court lifted a previous hold placed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on his trial related to the 2015 Bargari sacrilege cases.

The Supreme Court removed the judicial block that had stalled the prosecution of Ram Rahim in three sacrilege cases involving the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs.

This means that Ram Rahim can now face prosecution for three cases involving the disrespect of the Guru Granth Sahib.

The Supreme Court Bench, comprising Justices BR. Gavai and KV Viswanathan, also issued a notice to Ram Rahim, requiring his response within four weeks.

Ram Rahim is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for rape and has also been convicted of murder. The sacrilege incidents happened in Bargari, Punjab, in 2015, causing significant anger in the Sikh community due to the alleged disrespect of their sacred text.

Earlier this year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had paused the legal proceedings against him, which led to the Punjab government challenging this decision in the Supreme Court.
