Big relief for Sadhguru in the Apex Court

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed all legal proceedings against the Isha Foundation, which is led by spiritual leader Sadhguru. This decision came after a father claimed that his two daughters had been “brainwashed” into joining the organization.

The court heard from the two daughters, aged 39 and 42, who confirmed that they are adults living at the ashram voluntarily and can leave whenever they wish. Because of this, the Supreme Court decided that no further action was needed, and the case was closed.

The court also stated that closing this case does not affect any other rules or regulations that the Isha Yoga Centre must follow.

The investigation started after a retired professor, Dr. S. Kamara, filed a petition claiming that his daughters and others were being held against their will at the ashram. He also alleged that the Foundation had cut off the sisters from their family. However, one woman had testified otherwise in court.

Isha Foundation’s response

In response to the allegations, the Isha Foundation released an official statement. They stated that the organization is dedicated to teaching yoga and spirituality and respects individuals’ freedom to make their own choices. They clarified that they do not force anyone to marry or take vows of monkhood, as these are personal decisions.

The Foundation also mentioned that the police visits were routine inquiries and not raids, emphasizing that officers were gathering information about the lifestyle and experiences of residents and volunteers at the ashram.

Previous court rulings

Earlier, on October 3, the Supreme Court had instructed the Tamil Nadu Police not to act on an order from the Madras High Court, which had asked for an investigation into the alleged illegal confinement of the women at the ashram. Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud emphasized that authorities cannot enter the ashram without good reason. The court also requested a status report from the police as previously ordered.

The case was transferred to the Supreme Court after a complaint was made regarding a police investigation that allowed officers to visit the ashram following kidnapping allegations.
