BRICS Summit: PM Modi’s Russia visit begins, set to meet Prez Putin; talks with China’s Xi Jinping expected

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on his journey to Russia to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. Upon his arrival, he is scheduled to hold crucial bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and may also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with leaders from other BRICS member nations.

In a statement prior to his departure, PM Modi emphasized the importance of BRICS as a vital platform for dialogue on global developmental issues, including reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, and strengthening cultural ties. He stated, “India values the close cooperation within BRICS, which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda.”

The Prime Minister’s visit aims to further solidify the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between India and Russia, especially in light of ongoing global unrest, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and crises in the Middle East.

India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, highlighted India’s commitment to peace and conflict resolution during a recent interview, asserting that all parties must engage in dialogue to find resolutions to ongoing conflicts. This sentiment was echoed by Putin, who previously acknowledged PM Modi as a “friend” and expressed gratitude for India’s support in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war. This acknowledgment led to the invitation for Modi to attend the BRICS Summit.

This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Russia this year; he attended the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in Moscow in July, where he held significant discussions with Putin and was awarded Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.

Another noteworthy development ahead of the summit is the recent agreement between India and China to resume patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, a move that signifies a breakthrough in diplomatic relations between the two nations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned that discussions regarding a potential meeting between PM Modi and President Xi are still ongoing.

The two-day BRICS Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will serve as a crucial platform for leaders to address key global challenges and evaluate the progress of initiatives launched by the nine-nation alliance while exploring avenues for future collaboration.
