Punjab Police seizes 105 kg of heroin in state’s biggest smuggling bust

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Punjab Police seized 105 kg of heroin in an intelligence-led operation on Sunday, dismantling a cross-border cartel that utilized water routes for smuggling. The operation targeted associates of the foreign-based drug smuggler Navpreet Singh, also known as Nav Bhullar.

Alongside the heroin, police recovered 31.93 kg of caffeine anhydrous, 17 kg of DMR (Drug Master Record), five foreign-made pistols, and one locally-made firearm, referred to as a “desi katta.” Two suspects, Navjot Singh and Lovepreet Kumar, were arrested during the operation.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the drugs were transported from Pakistan via water routes, with recovered large rubber tubes indicating their use in smuggling operations. An FIR has been filed at the State Special Operations Cell police station in Amritsar, with ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering further links to the drug cartel and apprehending additional suspects.

The Border Security Force (BSF), responsible for safeguarding the challenging 553-km India-Pakistan border in Punjab, has been actively combating smuggling activities. In the past year, the BSF reported the downing of 107 drones and the seizure of over 442 kg of heroin, along with 23 weapons and 505 rounds of ammunition. Their operations have also led to the apprehension of various individuals involved in smuggling.

Despite numerous challenges, including adverse weather conditions and a surge in smuggling attempts, BSF personnel remain committed to securing the border around the clock. In 2023, the BSF successfully handed over 12 Pakistani nationals who inadvertently crossed the border back to Pakistan Rangers.

Additionally, during the recent floods in bordering districts such as Pathankot and Gurdaspur, the BSF has conducted rescue and relief operations for affected villagers.
