Violent disruptions at consular camp in Brampton spark outrage

In a troubling series of events, Khalistani elements launched attacks on devotees outside the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton. At the same time, simultaneous violent disruptions occurred outside a consular camp organized in collaboration with the temple. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa condemned these incidents, which they described as orchestrated by anti-India factions.

The High Commission expressed disappointment in a statement, noting, “It is deeply disappointing to see such disruptions being allowed for routine consular work being organized by our Consulates with the fullest cooperation of local co-organizers.” They voiced concern for the safety of applicants, including Indian nationals, and highlighted that despite these efforts to hinder operations, more than 1,000 life certificates were issued during the event.

This unrest is not isolated; reports indicate that similar attempts to disrupt consular camps occurred in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2 and 3. In Vancouver, a 60-meter buffer zone was established around one of the city’s largest gurdwaras following a British Columbia Supreme Court order, as Sikh extremist groups threatened to instigate chaos during the consular activities.

The Khalsa Diwan Society, which oversees the Vancouver gurdwara, sought a preemptive injunction, citing expectations of “intense protests” at the consular camps. These events, which facilitate administrative tasks for seniors of Indian descent, are typically held annually.

Meanwhile, the violent altercation outside the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton prompted widespread condemnation from political leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He denounced the attacks, stating, “The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.” Despite the absence of arrests linked to the incident, Peel Police maintained a strong presence at the temple to ensure community safety and support ongoing investigations.
