The deployment of the NSG is a key component of a broader anti-terror strategy developed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police

MHA permanently stationed NSG unit in Jammu to counter terror threats

A month after a team of National Security Guards (NSG) was deployed on ground zero to flush out a group of terrorists holed up inside a religious place in the Akhnoor area, the Ministry of Home Affairs has now decided to permanently station one component of the elite commandos in the Jammu City to tackle any future threat.

The proposal was in the pipeline for a long time. The MHA had earlier inducted NSG teams in Jammu and Kashmir as a back-up plan. However, the teams returned to their base after spending considerable time in the region.

According to official sources, the MHA evaluated the proposal to set up a separate hub in Jammu City and formally gave its nod in the wake of the recent upsurge in incidents of terrorist-related violence across the Jammu region.

According to official sources, the Jammu and Kashmir police have finalized its anti-terror plan and have kept deployment of NSG teams trained in fighting in built-up areas, in its backup plan.

The plan was formulated after a fresh security audit of the vital security installations, high-rise buildings, and other strategic assets spread across the Jammu region.

Last month when a group of Pakistani terrorists was holed up inside a religious place in the Akhnoor area the NSG commandos were deployed on ground zero to neutralize them. Trained in-house intervention the NSG teams assisted the special forces and neutralised terrorists.

According to the anti-terror plan, the teams of the Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir police and the NSG will work in close coordination to neutralize the terrorists during anti-terror operations.

After the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, five separate NSG hubs were created by the Government of India to cut down the travel time. These hubs were created in Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.
