Houthi drone attack on Yemen’s Taiz province market leaves six dead, eight injured

A drone attack by the Houthi group on a bustling market in Yemen‘s Taiz province has left six people dead and eight others injured.

However, the Houthi group has not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack.

The local pro-government military official, who requested anonymity, said on Sunday that “the Houthi bombing occurred in the Maqbanah district of Taiz during a busy market day when dozens of local residents were present,” Xinhua news agency reported.

The attack has sparked widespread condemnation from the Yemeni government, which has directly blamed the Houthi rebels for the incident.

Yemen’s Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani described the bombing as part of a “brutal and deliberate” campaign of violence by Houthi militias against civilians in Taiz. He called for immediate international intervention and urged the United Nations, along with human rights organizations, to condemn what he called a “heinous crime” that highlighted the militia’s disregard for human life.

Local medical sources confirmed the severity of the attack, noting that some of the injured are in critical condition.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since late 2014, with Houthi rebels fighting against the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

The conflict escalated in 2015 when the Houthis entered Taiz province and besieged its capital, Taiz. While the city remains under government control, it continues to be surrounded by Houthi forces.
