Zomato gets tax notice for non-payment of GST

Zomato, the popular food delivery app, has been served a notice for non-payment of GST, with the GST department in Thane imposing a tax demand of Rs.803.4 crore, including interest and penalty. The demand pertains to GST dues on delivery charges, with interest and penalties added, as confirmed in a regulatory filing by the company.

The company stated that it intends to file an appeal before the appropriate authority, asserting that it has a strong case. “The company has received an order on 12 December 2024 for the period 29 October 2019 to 31 March 2022, confirming a GST demand of Rs.401.7 crore with interest and penalty of an equal amount,” Zomato stated.

“We believe that we have a strong case on merits, which is supported by opinions from our external legal and tax advisors. The company will be filing an appeal against the order,” the filing added.

In other news, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has attracted attention for his unconventional posts. Recently, he posted a job listing for a Chief of Staff, asking applicants to pay Rs.20 lakh to the company to secure the position. He later clarified that the intention was not to charge applicants but to filter out those who truly appreciated the career opportunity, noting that over 18,000 applications had been received.

Shares of restaurant aggregator and Blinkit operator Zomato Ltd. sank over 2 percent in early trade on December 13.
