Baharampur becomes new battleground for BJP-TMC political clash

Baharampur in West Bengal is emerging as a new arena for political confrontation between the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Murshidabad unit of the BJP has announced plans to build a Ram temple in Baharampur, which is seen as a countermeasure to a recent proposal from TMC.

TMC MLA Humayun Kabir recently suggested constructing a mosque in the Beldanga locality in Murshidabad, modeled after the historic Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, which was demolished on December 6, 1992. This proposal has sparked political controversy.

The BJP plans to begin construction of the Ram temple on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP’s Baharampur Organisational District President Shakharav Sarkar confirmed that land for the temple has already been identified, with the project estimated to cost Rs.10 crore. He stated, “The construction work for the Ram temple, based on the design of the Ayodhya temple, will begin soon.”

On the other hand, TMC MLA Kabir announced plans to build the mosque in Beldanga, emphasizing it would honor the sentiments of the region’s significant Muslim population. His comments have stirred accusations from opposition parties of attempting to polarize communities for political gain.

The BJP’s decision to propose the Ram temple is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen its position among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, where minorities make up around 75 percent of the population.

In response to the controversy, the TMC has distanced itself from Kabir’s remarks, stating that they were his personal opinion. “The TMC has nothing to do with this statement about Kabir,” a senior party leader clarified.

Kabir’s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of divisive politics in a sensitive region.
