Putin open to compromise in talks with Trump on ending Ukraine war

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed readiness for potential talks with US President-elect Donald Trump to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating that Russia is open to compromise. Putin emphasized that politics often requires compromise, but said any discussions would be based on the “situation on the ground,” referring to some of the conditions he has previously outlined, including Ukraine renouncing its NATO ambitions and recognizing Russia’s territorial gains. These demands have been rejected by Kyiv and Western nations.

Responding to questions on state TV during his annual Q&A session with Russians, Putin told a reporter for a US news channel that he had not spoken with Trump in years but was ready to meet with him to discuss the conflict.

Putin rejected claims that Russia was in a weak position, asserting that the country had grown stronger since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While Putin stated Russia was open to negotiations, he asserted that Kyiv must be prepared for compromises as well.

Putin boasts Russia’s strengthened military

During his annual press conference, Putin also praised Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, claiming they have bolstered Russia’s military and economic power. He argued that had the decision to send troops into Ukraine been made earlier, Russia would have been better prepared. “Russia is now much stronger,” he asserted, adding that the country’s defense capabilities are now the “strongest in the world.”

Hypersonic missiles and a challenge to the West

In response to questions about Russia’s new hypersonic ballistic missile, Putin mocked claims that NATO’s air defence systems could intercept it. He proposed a “high-tech duel,” suggesting that Russia could strike a target in Kyiv, giving NATO a chance to defend the city. He said, “Let’s see what happens.”

Security blunders and military setbacks

Putin also addressed the recent killing of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, a key Russian general, who was killed by a bomb in Moscow, an act claimed by Ukraine. He described the assassination as a “major blunder” by Russia’s security agencies, calling for improvements in their operations.

In addition, Russian forces are engaged in slow but steady advances in Ukraine, including an incursion into the Kursk region of Russia. When asked how long it would take to push Ukrainian forces out, Putin responded, “We will certainly kick them out.”
