Swamy flags narcotics, bank fraud allegations involving Ashoka University co-founders

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to probe into the recent mysterious death of two students at Ashoka University. Swamy also pointed out that some founding members of the University raised concerns about narcotics and agencies’ probe of two co-founders of the University in a bank fraud related to a parabolic drug case.

In a letter to Chief Minister, Subramanian Swamy urged for the formation of a high-level probe team comprising members of the Narcotic Control Bureau. “I am writing to bring to your immediate attention the tragic demise of two students at Ashoka University under mysterious circumstances. This unfortunate incident has raised serious concerns regarding student safety on the university campus. A safe, secure, and conducive learning environment is an essential prerequisite for quality education and research. Educational administrators must ensure that students are protected from all forms of threats, accidents, and harm—both man-made and natural.

“According to the Code of Conduct published on Ashoka University’s official website, the campus is designated as a smoke-free, alcohol-free, and drug-free zone. The university also acknowledges that the consumption of intoxicants, drugs, or alcohol is strictly prohibited under Haryana state laws. However, recent developments suggest that this policy may not be effectively enforced. Notably, a founding member of the university has publicly raised concerns regarding drug consumption on campus. In a recent statement on social media (X) and in an interview with the Times of India, he urged the student council to clarify their stance on substance abuse, particularly regarding marijuana and cannabis. Such revelations necessitate a thorough and transparent investigation into the university’s compliance with its own regulations.

“Furthermore, it is imperative to scrutinize the role of the university’s management and faculty in ensuring student safety. It is worth mentioning that in 2023, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Ashoka University co-founders Pranav Gupta and Vineet Gupta in connection with an alleged Rs.1,627 crore bank fraud linked to Parabolic Drugs. This case, investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), further highlights the need for stringent oversight of the university’s administration. Given these concerns, I strongly urge the Haryana Government to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the recent deaths, including a thorough inquiry into any potential involvement of substance abuse or drug overdose. In this regard, I request the formation of a high-level committee, including experts from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), to investigate this matter with due diligence and transparency.

“For any further assistance or information, your office may contact my associate, Mr. Satya Sabharwal, at +91 9999 034 034. Additionally, please feel free to reach out to me directly should you require any further clarification or support. Your prompt intervention in this matter will not only ensure justice for the affected students and their families but also reinforce trust in the safety measures implemented at educational institutions across Haryana,” said Subramanian Swamy seeking a probe into the mysterious death of two students in Ashoka University.

Two students from Telangana and Karnataka were found dead on the intervening night of February 14 & 15 at Ashoka University campus[1].
