IIDS Recognises Dr Sangita Swechcha in the ‘Magnificent 100+’

Kathmandu, Nepal – 21 March 2025 – The Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) proudly honours Dr Sangita Shrestha, widely known by her pen name Sangita Swechcha, as part of the Magnificent 100+, a flagship initiative under the Decade of Nepali Diaspora (2024–2034 AD). This recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to Nepali literature, global development, and women’s empowerment.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Sneha Ghimire, Senior Programme and Research Assistant at IIDS, stated:

“Nepal’s diaspora represents 15% of the nation’s productive population and holds immense potential to propel the nation’s development journey. Recognising this potential, the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) has launched the ‘Decade of Nepali Diaspora’ initiative 2081-2090 BS (2024 – 2034 AD). This ambitious programme aims to bridge the gap between Nepal and its diaspora community.”

A key component of the initiative, “Magnificent 100+”, features over 100 outstanding Nepali diaspora members across various fields. Their inspiring stories celebrate their achievements and their valuable contributions to Nepal and beyond.

“The initiative goes beyond mere celebration. It seeks to transform the narrative surrounding the diaspora’s role in empowering Nepali identity,” Ghimire added.

A distinguished writer, poet, and scholar based in England, Dr Sangita has played a vital role in promoting Nepali literature on the global stage.  

Beyond literature, Dr Sangita is a scholar with a PhD in Environmental Communication and over 15 years of experience in international development. Her dedication to education, women’s empowerment, and cross-cultural dialogue makes her a powerful voice in both academia and activism.

Her literary and advocacy work has earned her several prestigious accolades. She received the Nawaratna Nari Award in 2023 and was honoured with the Ambassador of Peace Award by the Universal Peace Federation UK in 2024 for her contributions to international development and peace-building. In recognition of her academic excellence, she was awarded the Mahendra Vidhya Bhushan in 2000 and the Nepal Vidhya Bhushan in 2014.

Recently, Dr Sangita joined IIDS for an engaging discussion on literature, diaspora engagement, and global development. Through Magnificent 100+, IIDS continues to spotlight exceptional individuals whose impact transcends borders.
