India to send strong zero-tolerance message on terrorism to key global partners

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will head an all-party delegation tasked with conveying India’s strong stance on zero-tolerance against terrorism to the international community. This significant outreach comes in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, India’s targeted military offensive against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Despite facing criticism within his own party for praising the government’s actions post-Operation Sindoor, Mr. Tharoor has been entrusted with a key diplomatic role, leveraging his extensive experience as a former diplomat.

Govt announces seven all-party delegations

On Saturday, the government announced the formation of seven all-party delegations comprising members from both the Opposition and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). These delegations will engage with key global partners, including members of the UN Security Council, to present India’s unified message against terrorism.

“In moments that matter most, Bharat stands united,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated on X, highlighting the bipartisan nature of this diplomatic mission.

Leaders across the political spectrum included

Apart from Shashi Tharoor, other prominent Opposition leaders named include DMK’s Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule. From the NDA, the selected leaders are:

BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad

BJP’s Baijayant Panda

JDU’s Sanjay Kumar Jha

Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Eknath Shinde

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs confirmed that these delegations will visit various nations to “project India’s national consensus” and “resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations.”

Broader political representation expected

Additional leaders expected to participate in this diplomatic effort include:

AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi

Congress’ Salman Khurshid and Manish Tewari

DPAP’s Ghulam Nabi Azad

Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi

BJD’s Sasmit Patra

AAP’s Vikramjeet Sawhney

CPM’s John Brittas

Senior BJP figures like Nishikant Dubey, Bansuri Swaraj, Anurag Thakur, MJ Akbar, Samik Bhattacharya, Daggubati Purandeswari, and SS Ahluwalia

The delegations are expected to conduct this outreach over a 10-day period, visiting several strategic partner nations.

Background: Operation Sindoor and India-Pakistan tensions

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. The Indian armed forces targeted and destroyed nine terror camps operated by groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen in Pakistan and PoK.

Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile strikes, which were effectively intercepted by India’s defence systems. India then responded with precision strikes on Pakistani military targets. After four days of escalated cross-border exchanges, both nations agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

Conclusion

This all-party diplomatic initiative aims to present a united Indian stance against terrorism on the global stage, transcending political divides. The outreach underscores India’s commitment to combating terrorism through cohesive national and international efforts.
