J&K: Omar Abdullah sworn in as Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary becomes Deputy CM

Omar Abdullah takes oath as first CM of J&K UT

Omar Abdullah, leader of the National Conference, was officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, marking the first government formation in the Union Territory in six years. Independent MLA Surinder Singh Choudhary, who notably defeated J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina in the recent Assembly elections, has been appointed as Deputy Chief Minister, ensuring representation from the Jammu region in the new administration.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conducted the oath-taking ceremony at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. Several prominent opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, attended the event.

Alongside Abdullah and Choudhary, five other MLAs took their oaths: Satish Sharma (Independent), Sakina Itoo, Javid Dar, Sunrinder Chowdhury, and Javid Rana, all from the National Conference.

Following the ceremony, Chief Minister Abdullah is scheduled to convene a meeting with all administrative secretaries at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the Civil Secretariat. His first Cabinet meeting is set for Thursday.

In anticipation of the swearing-in event, security measures were heightened, and the traffic department issued advisories to restrict vehicle movement on Boulevard Road, leading to the SKICC, to facilitate a smooth ceremony.
