Macron expresses indignation over Israel’s attack on UN peacekeepers

French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced his strong indignation over Israel’s recent attack on United Nations (UN) peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, as tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Hezbollah. In a statement from the Elysee Palace, Macron urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call on Tuesday to “put an end to this unjustifiable targeting.”

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) plays a crucial role in stabilizing the region, and Macron emphasized its importance for the security of both Israel and Lebanon. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting UNIFIL and collaborating with the UN Secretary-General to ensure the mission’s effective implementation.

Macron called for an immediate ceasefire, highlighting the urgent need to prevent a wider regional conflict that could have devastating impacts on civilians and international security. He condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israeli territory, as well as Israel’s retaliatory strikes, which he described as exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in both Gaza and Lebanon.

The French president also expressed deep concern over the situation in the West Bank, particularly the violence against civilians, including actions by settlers, and the acceleration of settlement activities.

Since October 8, 2023, hostilities have intensified along the Lebanon-Israel border, with exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military raising fears of a broader conflict amid the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.
