Hoax bomb threats disrupt flights in India for third consecutive day

In a worrying trend, two more flights in India received bomb threats on Wednesday, bringing the total to 12 incidents in just three days. The affected flights included an Akasa Air service bound for Bengaluru and an IndiGo flight heading to Delhi.

An Akasa Air spokesperson confirmed that flight QP 1335, carrying 177 passengers, including three infants, along with seven crew members, was forced to return to Delhi due to the threat. Similarly, IndiGo’s flight 6E 651 from Mumbai to Delhi was redirected to Ahmedabad, where the aircraft was isolated and all passengers were safely disembarked.

On Tuesday, several other flights also reported bomb threats, including an Air India service from Delhi to Chicago, an IndiGo flight from Dammam to Lucknow, an Air India Express flight from Ayodhya to Bengaluru, a SpiceJet flight from Darbhanga to Mumbai (SG116), an Akasa Air flight from Bagdogra to Bengaluru (QP 1373), an Alliance Air service from Amritsar to Dehradun to Delhi (9I 650), and an Air India Express flight (IX 684) from Madurai to Singapore.

On Monday, threats were also reported for two IndiGo flights and one Air India flight, including Air India flight AI119 from Mumbai to New York’s JFK Airport, IndiGo flight 6E1275 bound for Muscat, and flight 6E56 heading to Jeddah.

In response to the escalating situation, a Parliamentary Standing Committee convened at 11 a.m. to discuss the issue. This was preceded by a meeting led by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu with officials from the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Aviation officials told MPs “critical leads” and a few initial suspects had been identified. Sources have indicated that some suspects have been identified, and monitoring of the dark web is underway to further investigate the threats.
