Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has reportedly laid off employees across several teams, including those working on WhatsApp and Instagram, in a restructuring effort. The layoffs were confirmed on Thursday, although the company has not disclosed the exact number of employees affected.

In a statement to TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson acknowledged the layoffs, explaining that multiple teams are adjusting their resources to better align with the company’s long-term strategic goals. “This includes moving some teams to different locations and transitioning some employees to different roles. In situations where a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees,” the spokesperson said.

Reports indicate that employees from Reality Labs, Instagram, and WhatsApp were among those affected by the job cuts. Several individuals shared their experiences on social media after receiving layoff notifications. Jane Manchun Wong, a member of the Threads team, expressed her feelings on the platform, stating, “I’m still trying to process this but I’m informed that my role at Meta has been impacted. Thank you to everyone, especially my Threads and Instagram teammates, for my wild journey at Meta.”

Earlier this year, Meta had already laid off employees within its Reality Labs division. The recent cuts follow a series of significant layoffs, including 11,000 jobs in 2022 and another 10,000 in 2023, as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s focus on a “year of efficiency.” The company also retracted 5,000 open positions during this time.

As Meta continues to navigate a challenging economic landscape, these layoffs signal a continued effort to streamline operations and adapt to shifting market demands.
