A drone launched from Lebanon exploded near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s private residence in Caesarea on Saturday, according to reports from Reuters. The Prime Minister’s spokesperson confirmed that neither Netanyahu nor his wife were present at the time of the attack, which comes just two days after Israel killed Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.

Israeli air defenses intercepted two other drones launched from Lebanon, which triggered sirens in the Tel Aviv area. The third drone, however, managed to evade interception and struck a building in Caesarea, resulting in a loud explosion. Saudi outlet Al-Hadath reported that a portion of the building was damaged, but no casualties were reported.

The drone reportedly traveled approximately 70 kilometers from Lebanon before impacting its target in Caesarea. The attack follows the death of Sinwar, the architect of Hamas’s October 7, 2023, assault on Israel that ignited the ongoing Gaza war. Israeli forces killed Sinwar after a year-long manhunt, sharing footage of his final moments in which he attempted to fend off an Israeli drone before being killed.

In the aftermath, Hamas vowed to continue its fight against Israel. Khalil al-Hayya, Sinwar’s deputy, asserted that the group would emerge stronger, while Netanyahu described the operation against Sinwar as a significant milestone in diminishing Hamas’s influence.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed support for Hamas, stating that Sinwar’s death would not deter the “Axis of Resistance,” which includes Iranian-backed militias across the region. Khamenei emphasized that the loss of prominent figures would not halt their advances, declaring, “Hamas is alive and will remain alive.”

The recent escalation, marked by the drone attack and the killing of Sinwar, raises concerns about a potential surge in conflict between Israel and Iran-backed groups throughout the Middle East. As tensions continue to rise, international calls for a ceasefire grow louder, though both sides remain resolute in their positions.
