Amit Shah likely to meet Kolkata rape victim’s parents on Sunday

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has agreed to meet the parents of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was tragically raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August. The decision follows a letter from the victim’s father, who expressed a deep need for guidance and support in the aftermath of the horrific incident.

Sources indicate that while Shah was scheduled to arrive in Kolkata ahead of bypolls for six Assembly constituencies, his visit has been postponed. It is now anticipated that he may arrive in the state on Sunday when the meeting with the victim’s parents could be arranged.

The victim’s father described the immense mental strain his family has endured since the tragedy, stating, “We are feeling helpless.” His request for a meeting with the Home Minister comes just a day after junior doctors at RG Kar withdrew their fast-unto-death protest, which they had initiated to demand justice following the incident. The doctors made this decision following appeals from the victim’s parents.

The body of the victim was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on the morning of August 9. Initially, Kolkata Police launched an investigation and arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy. However, the case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after a court order.

Since then, the CBI has made significant arrests, including that of the former principal of RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, for allegedly misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence. In a recent chargesheet filed by the CBI, Sanjay Roy has been named the “sole prime accused” in the rape and murder case.

As the investigation continues, the victim’s family seeks justice and closure, while the medical community remains vigilant and engaged in ensuring the safety and well-being of their colleagues.
