Iran should not make the mistake of responding to Israel’s retaliatory strikes: US

In a show of unwavering support for Israel, the United States issued a stern warning to Iran on Saturday, cautioning against any retaliation in response to recent Israeli airstrikes that targeted Iranian military positions. These strikes resulted in the deaths of at least four Iranian soldiers.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized that the United States is well-prepared to defend its forces and facilities across the region. “Iran should not make the mistake of responding to Israel’s strikes, which should mark the end of this exchange,” Austin stated in a post on X.

The warning comes amid escalating tensions following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian sites, prompting a stern response from Tehran, which vowed to defend itself. In a separate statement, Israeli officials cautioned that any retaliatory actions from Iran would result in significant consequences.

As concerns mount over the potential for a broader conflict involving Israel, Iran, and militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate the situation. However, both sides have engaged in a war of words, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserting that Iran’s military forces are prepared to respond to any future aggression with “tact and intelligence.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that Israel’s military actions are determined by its national interests, rather than external pressures, particularly from the United States. His comments followed reports suggesting that Israel had refrained from targeting Iranian gas and oil facilities due to US influence.

High-level meetings in Tehran were convened to discuss Iran’s response to the strikes, although Iranian officials downplayed the impact of the attacks, stating that the damage was “very minimal.” Nevertheless, they confirmed that several bases of the Revolutionary Guards were struck.

In a sign of relative calm, the Israeli army has eased certain safety restrictions for residents in northern Israel, indicating that it does not anticipate an immediate large-scale response from Iran or its regional proxies.
