PM Modi inaugurates multiple health sector projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a series of health initiatives worth approximately Rs.12,850 crore at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi on Tuesday, coinciding with the celebration of Dhanvantari Jayanti and the 9th Ayurveda Day.

This ambitious plan aims to enhance healthcare delivery across the country.

During the event, PM Modi emphasized the importance of integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine, stating that this approach has ushered in a new era in the health sector over the past decade. “India is looking at the health sector as holistic health,” he remarked while outlining five key pillars of the national health policy: preventive healthcare, early disease detection, accessible treatment, and medications, increased availability of doctors in smaller towns, and the expansion of technology in health services.

The newly announced projects include the establishment of four centers of excellence under the Ayush Health Scheme, drone-assisted health services, helicopter services for AIIMS-Rishikesh, and new infrastructure developments for AIIMS in New Delhi and Bilaspur. Additionally, medical colleges and nursing institutions will be established, further strengthening India’s healthcare framework.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister highlighted the crucial role of newly inaugurated pharmaceutical units in manufacturing advanced medicines and high-quality medical devices, which he believes will contribute significantly to the nation’s healthcare growth.

PM Modi also addressed the flagship Ayushman Bharat Yojana, noting that approximately four crore underprivileged citizens have benefited from treatment without incurring costs. He announced an expansion of the scheme to include free hospital treatment for all citizens over the age of 70, accessible through the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card, which is income-neutral and available to all classes.

Moreover, the Prime Minister reported the establishment of over 14,000 PM Jan Aushadhi Kendras, where essential medicines are available at a remarkable 80% discount, leading to significant savings for poorer and middle-class families. He stated that the availability of affordable medications has resulted in savings of Rs.30,000 crore for these families, while price reductions on medical devices have saved citizens over Rs.80,000 crore.

PM Modi further discussed initiatives like the free dialysis scheme and Mission Indradhanush, which aims to combat fatal diseases and protect pregnant women and newborns. He noted that over two lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been set up nationwide to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and the e-Sanjeevani scheme has provided free online consultations to more than 30 crore people.

The launch of the U-win platform was also announced, promising to enhance technological interfaces within the healthcare sector. Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated new hospitals in several states, including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, and laid the foundation for medical colleges in various locations.

Highlighting the growing demand for medical and wellness tourism, PM Modi underscored the need to validate traditional herbs like Ashwagandha and turmeric through rigorous scientific studies. He expressed confidence that this validation would not only boost the value of these herbs but also expand their market reach.

“The AYUSH manufacturing sector has seen tremendous growth, rising from $3 billion in 2014 to nearly $24 billion today,” PM Modi stated, pointing out that over 900 AYUSH startups are currently operational in India, generating new opportunities for the youth. He emphasized that AYUSH products are now being exported to 150 countries, turning local herbs and superfoods into global commodities.
