Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Thursday, his 149th birthday at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. The occasion marked the celebration of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, which honors Patel’s legacy every year on October 31. PM Modi’s visit is part of a two-day engagement in the state.

During the festivities at the Unity Parade Ground in Kevadia, PM Modi noted the unique coincidence of celebrating both National Unity Day and the festival of Diwali on the same day. “This time the National Unity Day has brought a wonderful coincidence. On one hand, we are celebrating the festival of unity, and on the other hand, it is also the festival of Diwali,” he stated, emphasizing the significance of Diwali as a festival that connects India to the global community.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing the ‘One Nation, One Election‘ initiative, which aims to synchronize elections across the country. “We are now working towards ‘One Nation, One Election’, which will strengthen India’s democracy, optimize the use of resources, and propel the nation toward becoming a developed India,” he said. The proposal, previously approved by the cabinet, is set to be presented in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.

In addition, PM Modi announced the intention to establish a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, describing it as a secular civil code that aligns with national unity. He remarked, “Today, India is moving towards ‘One Nation, One Civil Code’.”

Reflecting on significant legislative changes, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, declaring that it has been “buried forever.” He criticized opposition parties for their perceived hypocrisy regarding constitutional values, stating, “For 70 years, Babasaheb Ambedkar‘s Constitution was not implemented in the entire country due to the wall of Article 370.”

PM Modi emphasized the achievements of his government over the past decade in addressing national security threats and resolving regional conflicts, particularly in the northeastern states. “The Bodo and Bru-Reang agreements have established peace and stability,” he noted, adding that dialogue and development have paved the way for resolving longstanding issues.

As India celebrates its diverse festivals and commemorates its leaders, PM Modi’s address at the National Unity Day events underscores the government’s vision for a unified and progressive nation.
