First terror encounter in downtown Srinagar in over a decade

In a significant security operation in Srinagar, one unidentified terrorist was killed, and four security personnel—two CRPF jawans and two policemen—were injured during a gunfight on Saturday in the Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar.

According to police reports, the encounter began after security forces initiated a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) following intelligence inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in the area. As the forces closed in, the terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire that is still ongoing.

This incident marks the first such encounter in downtown Srinagar in over a decade, a region once considered a hotbed of separatist activity. Over the years, security forces have made significant progress in curbing militancy in the city, leading to a belief that areas like Khanyar had been largely cleared of terrorist threats. However, the recent gunfight has raised concerns about the resurgence of militancy in the region.

In a related operation, security forces also neutralized two terrorists near Halkan Gali in the Shangus-Larnoo area of Anantnag district.

The situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains tense, as evidenced by a recent attack in the Mazhama village of Budgam district, where two non-local laborers from Uttar Pradesh were shot and injured by terrorists. Both victims were rushed to a hospital, and their condition has been reported as stable.

This surge in violence follows last month’s deadly attacks, where terrorists killed six workers from an infrastructure project and a local doctor in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district. The workers were involved in a project aimed at enhancing economic growth and connectivity in the region. Additionally, a separate attack resulted in the deaths of three army soldiers and two porters in the Botapathri area of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district.

The ongoing security operations underscore the continued challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
