Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his appreciation for the film The Sabarmati Report, which depicts the tragic Godhra train burning incident that occurred on February 27, 2002. The film dramatizes the horrific event that led to the deaths of 59 people aboard the Sabarmati Express, including Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya.

PM Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at the time of the incident, hailed the film for presenting a factual portrayal of the events, particularly the longstanding controversy surrounding the tragedy.

Sharing a post by cinegoer Alok Bhatt on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “Well said. It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it.” He further added, “A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!” Modi’s endorsement came as he shared Bhatt’s praise for the film, which Bhatt described as a “must-watch.”

Bhatt, in his post, highlighted the film’s sensitive and dignified handling of the incident. He wrote, “The makers of the film handled this issue with a lot of sensitivity and dignity.” Bhatt also pointed out that the film brings out an important truth: how the tragedy was manipulated for political gain by a group with vested interests. He said, “It is worth introspection for all of us as to how the brutal burning of passengers of the Sabarmati Express was turned into a political minefield by a vested interest group, who saw it as a means to tarnish the image of one leader. Their ecosystem peddled one lie after another just to satisfy their own petty agenda.”

Bhatt concluded his post by emphasizing that the film gives a voice to the victims of the tragedy, many of whom were long overshadowed by political and communal narratives. “Finally, 59 innocent victims got to speak for themselves. Yes, as they say, truth alone triumphs. This movie is indeed a fitting tribute to those 59 innocent men, women, and children we lost that February morning,” he wrote.

The Sabarmati Report focuses on the tragic events of the morning of February 27, 2002, when a fire broke out on the Sabarmati Express near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat.
