After Kolkata hospital, now Tripura hospital shuts door for Bangladeshi patients

A day after a Kolkata hospital ceased treating patients from Bangladesh due to atrocities against Hindus, ILS Hospital in Agartala followed suit on Saturday, halting medical services for Bangladeshi patients.

The hospital, which has long been a popular choice for patients from Bangladesh due to its proximity and affordable treatment, cited concerns over violence against Hindus and the disrespect shown to the Indian national flag in Bangladesh.

The decision was announced by ILS Hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, Gautam Hazarika, who expressed full support for the suspension of treatment to patients from Bangladesh. “Our help desks at Akhaura check post and ILS hospitals have been closed from today onwards,” Hazarika said in a statement.

Hazarika’s comments came after a protest outside ILS Hospital, where demonstrators demanded that the hospital cease providing services to Bangladeshi nationals. Protesters raised concerns about the alleged disrespect for the Indian flag and attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, calling the actions “unacceptable.”

“Disrespect to the Indian national flag and attacks on minorities is totally unrespectable,” said one protestor, who claimed that fundamentalists in Bangladesh were teaching students how to disrespect India’s national symbols. The protestor urged other institutions to follow suit and stop treating Bangladeshi citizens.

Similarly, JN Ray Hospital official Subhranshu Bhakt echoed the sentiments, adding, “Seeing the tricolour being insulted, we have decided to stop treating Bangladeshis. India played an important role in their independence, but despite that, we are witnessing anti-India sentiments. We hope other hospitals will support us and take similar steps.”

The move follows similar actions taken by JN Ray Hospital in North Kolkata on Friday. The Kolkata-based hospital also stopped treating Bangladeshi citizens, citing the same reasons, including growing concerns over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh and reports of disrespect toward the Indian flag.
