Irony of AAP: Delhi CM Atishi launches crowdfunding campaign for upcoming Assembly elections
Crowdfunding strategy, which has been a hallmark of AAP since its inception, is now front and center in its campaign for the 2025 Delhi Assembly election

A genuine appeal or strategic exploitation of Delhi voters?

During a press conference in Delhi, Chief Minister and AAP candidate from Kalkaji, Atishi shared an online donation link and announced her goal of raising Rs.40 lakh for the election campaign. She emphasized that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has consistently relied on small donations from the common man, enabling the party to maintain its commitment to transparency and integrity in politics.

Taking to social media platform X, Atishi said, “Over the past five years, you’ve stood by me as an MLA, a minister, and now as the Chief Minister of Delhi. None of this would have been possible without your blessings and support.”

She added, “As a young, educated woman, your belief and donations have enabled me to imagine a career in politics—a path I couldn’t have walked alone. Now, as we face another election campaign, I need your support once again.”

AAP’s history of crowdfunding

The crowdfunding campaign aligns with AAP’s tradition of involving citizens in its electoral efforts. In December, senior AAP leader and Jangpura candidate Manish Sisodia also launched a similar crowdfunding platform, seeking public financial support for his election bid.

Delhi Assembly Election details

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8. The AAP is aiming for a third consecutive term after securing 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020.

  • BJP’s Performance: The BJP won three seats in 2015 and increased its tally to eight in 2020.
  • Congress’s Performance: The Congress has failed to win a single seat in the past two elections.

Despite being part of the I.N.D.I. Alliance at the national level, Congress, and AAP are not contesting the Delhi elections together.

Atishi’s criticism of BJP

Atishi took a jab at the BJP for not announcing a chief ministerial candidate yet. She alleged, based on “credible sources,” that BJP plans to field Ramesh Bidhuri, accusing him of being known for “hurling the most abuses.”
