Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, addressing the media on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and along the Line of Control (LoC), revealed that 60% of the terrorists eliminated in the region last year were of Pakistani origin. Additionally, 80% of the terrorists still active in J&K are also Pakistani nationals.

Situation in Jammu and Kashmir

Gen Dwivedi highlighted that the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir is “firmly under control” despite challenges. He noted:

• Ceasefire holding: The ceasefire agreement along the LoC, in effect since February 2021, continues to hold.
• Persistent threats: Terror infrastructure across the border remains intact, with ongoing infiltration attempts via the LoC and International Border (IB).
• Drone activities: Drones are frequently used to smuggle arms, ammunition, and narcotics.
• Rising activity: Increased terrorist activities have been observed in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar belt.

However, Gen Dwivedi assured that overall violence parameters remain “under control.”

Positive developments in J&K

Gen Dwivedi pointed to signs of normalcy returning to the region:

• Amarnath Yatra: Over 5 lakh pilgrims participated in a peaceful Amarnath Yatra.
• Elections: The smooth conduct of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections reflects improving conditions.
• Tourism growth: The theme of “terrorism to tourism” is becoming a reality, indicating a positive shift in the region.

Update on the LAC situation

Regarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Gen Dwivedi described the situation as “stable but sensitive.” Key points include:

• Disengagement progress: Indian and Chinese forces have disengaged from the last two friction points in eastern Ladakh.
• Restored activities: Patrolling and grazing in traditional areas like Depsang and Demchok have resumed.
• Infrastructure development: The Army is focusing on strengthening border infrastructure and enhancing operational capabilities.

“Our deployment is balanced and robust; we are capable of handling any situation,” Gen Dwivedi stated.

India-China relations

The disengagement process in eastern Ladakh is part of ongoing efforts to restore bilateral ties between India and China, which were frozen after the 2020 Galwan standoff. Gen Dwivedi emphasized the Army’s preparedness to handle evolving challenges along the LAC.
