Ex-serviceman shot dead in cold blood in J&K’s Kulgam

Retired army man dies after terrorists fire at him, his family in Kulgam district

An ex-serviceman, who retired from active services of the Territorial Army about two years ago, was shot dead in a daring act of terrorist violence in the close vicinity of an army camp in the Behibagh area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday afternoon.

Before fleeing the terrorists also injured the wife of the retired soldier and another close relative present at the spot.

The deceased ex-serviceman has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Wagay. He is survived by four daughters and one son. Meanwhile, the condition of his injured wife and her niece was stated to be stable.

Reacting strongly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the heinous act of violence.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic killing of ex-serviceman Manzoor Ahmad Wagay Sahab in Kulgam. My heartfelt condolences to his family, and prayers for the swift recovery of his injured wife and daughter. Such heinous violence has no place in our society and must be condemned in the strongest terms. May peace and justice prevail” the Office of Chief Minister said in a post on X.

Soon after the attack took place the entire area of Behibag village was surrounded by the security forces as they launched massive search operations in the area to hunt down the perpetrators of terrorist violence.

So far no terrorist outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A family member told local reporters that I was sleeping inside one of the rooms in the house when I first heard the sound of gunshots. As I ran out of my room I spotted Manzor Ahmad Wagay lying in a pool of blood“. He had received gunshot injuries in his abdomen. The relative said I rushed him to GMC, Anantnag where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to close relatives Manzoor Ahmad Wagay retired from active services about two years ago. He was leading a peaceful life and running a business in the area to earn his livelihood.

Peoples Democratic Party Chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the attack. In a post on X, she wrote, “Saddened to know about the heinous killing of Manzoor Ahmed Waghey by militants in Kulgam today. My deepest condolences to his family & prayers for the swift recovery of his wife & daughter.
