Initiative aims to identify Hindu-owned mutton shops

Maharashtra Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitish Rane has introduced the ‘Malhar Certification’, a new initiative aimed at identifying mutton shops operated exclusively by Hindu community members. The move is intended to offer consumers an option to purchase meat from Hindu-owned businesses while ensuring adulteration-free products.

Announcing the initiative on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Rane stated:

“Today, we have taken a very important step for the Hindu community in Maharashtra. https://malharcertification.com has been launched on this occasion.”

He further emphasized that the certification would allow consumers to recognize Hindu-owned meat shops, ensuring 100% Hindu community involvement in the trade.

Rane urges support for certified shops

Rane has encouraged people to prioritize purchasing from shops with Malhar Certification while avoiding those that lack the certification. He asserted that the initiative would promote economic empowerment for Hindu youth involved in the meat trade.

“I appeal to you to use Malhar Certification as much as possible and to refrain from buying mutton from places where Malhar Certification is not available. These efforts will definitely lead to financial empowerment among Hindu youth,” he said.

Debate over communal implications

The certification drive has sparked a political and social debate, with some critics raising concerns about its communal nature. They argue that it could divide businesses along religious lines. However, supporters claim that it is a step towards strengthening the Hindu business community and ensuring economic stability in the sector.

Rane’s response to Raj Thackeray’s remarks on River Ganga

Apart from the Malhar Certification launch, Rane also reacted to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s comments on the cleanliness of the River Ganga. Thackeray had questioned the government’s ability to maintain clean rivers despite their cultural and religious importance.

Defending the ‘Namami Gange’ initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rane accused Thackeray of having incomplete knowledge of the project and disrespecting Hindu religious sentiments.

“Raj Sahib has incomplete information about the cleanliness drive—Namami Gange—under PM Modi’s leadership. No one has the right to insult the Hindu religion. I have never seen him question the sacrifice of goats during Bakr-Eid,” Rane said.

The Malhar Certification drive is expected to be implemented across Maharashtra in the coming months. Authorities are likely to issue further guidelines to regulate the certification process and its adherence.
