Centre notifies 24% hike in salaries, pensions for MPs

The Central government has officially increased the salaries, allowances, and pensions for Members of Parliament (MPs), as per a recent gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. The changes are effective from April 1, 2023.

As per the notification, the monthly salary for both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been revised from Rs.1 lakh to Rs.1.24 lakh. Additionally, the daily allowance during parliamentary sessions has been raised from Rs.2,000 to Rs.2,500.

Enhanced pension benefits for former MPs

The pension for former MPs has also been revised upward. It will now be Rs.31,000 per month, up from the earlier Rs.25,000. Furthermore, the additional pension for each year of service beyond five years has been increased from Rs.2,000 to Rs.2,500.

Update comes amid Budget Session

This salary and pension revision comes during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. The last revision in pay and allowances for MPs was carried out in April 2018. At that time, the base salary was set at Rs.1,00,000 per month to adjust for inflation and rising living costs.

Allowances to be adjusted accordingly

Under the 2018 structure, MPs received:

  • Rs.70,000 as constituency allowance
  • Rs.60,000 per month as office expense allowance
  • Rs.2,000 per day as a daily allowance during sessions

These allowances are expected to be revised in line with the salary hike. Additional perks include annual allowances for communication needs, including phone and internet usage.

Travel and utility benefits remain generous

MPs are entitled to:

  • 34 free domestic flights per year (for themselves and family)
  • Unlimited first-class train travel
  • Road mileage allowance
  • 50,000 free electricity units and 4,000 kilolitres of water annually

Housing and accommodation provisions

During their five-year term, MPs receive rent-free housing in New Delhi. Depending on seniority, they may be allotted hostel rooms, flats, or bungalows. Those not using official accommodations can opt for a monthly housing allowance instead.
