Pahalgam massacre: A tranquil Valley turned into a battleground by fanatic violence

On April 22, 2025, the tranquil mountain paths of Pahalgam were bloodied in a bout of senseless fanatic violence unleashed on 26 innocent tourists, which left the entire world and India shell-shocked. Entire families were grieving over the diabolical religious frenzy that left them desperately grieving over irrevocably lost sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers. The trauma is continuing for the affected families, the nation, and all right-thinking people. Events are racing to a full-scale war between India and Pakistan, which is going to be disastrous for world peace.

Ironically, the fanatical fury of terrorists has a grim message and warning for India:
Those four fanatics never wanted to know whether their victims spoke languages having classical status?

Those fanatics never wanted to know what caste or denomination the victims belonged to.

Those fanatics never wanted to know whether their victims were supporters of the BJP, Congress, the Communist, DMK, TMC, or the J&K National Conference.

Those fanatics were least interested in knowing which states the victims came from.

Those fanatics wanted only to know whether their victims were followers of Islam or not.

Those fanatics identified all entire humanity into two categories – those following Islam, and all the rest. It never mattered whether the victims followed Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, or were even atheists.

Those fanatics had devised a simple two-step verification plan to identify the religion of the victims:

  1. Recite the Kalema
  2. Check whether the victims had undergone circumcision.

If the victims failed in both these tests, immediate death was the punishment. It was part of a global modus operandi to devise a devious verification process and condemn the helpless victims to immediate death.

In Israel, the terror fanatics would check people’s cards, and if they were found to be Jewish, they would be shot instantly. In Nigeria, the terror fanatics would check people’s cards, and if they were found to belong to the Christian faith, they would be shot on the spot. In India, the terror fanatics force victims to remove their pants and undergarments to check if the victims were circumcised or not. If not circumcised, violent death was the reward. S Madhusudan Rao, a tourist from Karnataka, was shot 42 times by the terror fanatics in Pahalgam, Kashmir, while his wife lay by his side!

All politicians in India who try to divide people and foment violence in the name of language, State land borders, river water sharing, caste and denomination, job reservations, temple takeover, and minority appeasement, should understand that terror fanatics, will kill mercilessly, if you belong to a religion that is different from theirs. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s powerful slogan — ‘batenge to katenge’, is a timely reminder that if communities are not united, they will be ‘slaughtered if divided’. India’s corrupt political families, who are clinging to power only on the strength of divisive politics, should realize that they and their progeny cannot escape slaughter from terror fanatics.

This writer had visited Kashmir a fortnight ago. The group to which he belonged had visited the famous Shankaracharya Hill in Srinagar, had applied the Sindoor Prasad, and had then proceeded to Lal Chowk. There, the shopkeepers were making snide remarks, “Sab Om Shanti wale hain”. We need to be aware that secularism does not sell in Kashmir. The guides and chaiwallahs, who are present everywhere, could be terror informers and abettors. The Gulmarg cable car station is a security nightmare, with massive crowds jostling, pushing, and breaking the queue, leading to frequent altercations between the tourists and the so-called guides. Police personnel are not to be seen, and it appears that guides are illegally controlling the cable car traffic and crowds.

The Amarnath pilgrimage season is about to commence, and already war clouds are casting ominous shadows. The government should fortify the security coverage for pilgrims by sending fully armed commandos in the guise of pilgrims in order to surprise and repulse terror fanatics. Pilgrims and tourists should not be permitted to go exploring isolated mountain trails and remote locations. The guides need to be given uniforms and ID cards to spot their activities and movements.

Kashmir was enjoying relative calm and peace during the President’s rule. On December 11th, 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the government’s decision to scrap Article 370, but directed that steps should be taken to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir before September 30th, 2024. The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court expressly directed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) must conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of J&K by September 30, 2024. This writer, in his article ‘KASHMIR PREPARES FOR ANOTHER TERROR INNINGS’, published in PGurus on August 25th, 2024[1], had stated that “Should the judiciary not have seen the larger picture? Are elections more important than national security, the lives of common people, defence forces, and minority Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians? Even if the judiciary was of the opinion that elections are an imperative necessity, should it not have laid down the terms and conditions? Yes, elections, but as in commercial parlance, ‘Terms & Conditions apply’.

The world and the nation are seeing the fruits of the election ordered by the Supreme Court. 26 lives have been slaughtered in cold blood by terror fanatics. The nation has been driven to the brink of a major war, having even prospects of escalating into a nuclear confrontation. How many more lives of defence personnel and civilians are going to be sacrificed? Can the judges escape responsibility for their verdict that has led to the current bloodshed and threat of an imminent war? The judges need to understand that national security is supreme and not elections. Independence of the Judiciary does not mean independence from accountability.
