UP to introduce harsh laws against spitting, contamination in food stalls

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government is poised to enact two significant ordinances aimed at combating the alarming rise of food contamination and unsanitary practices in the state. These measures come in response to a series of shocking incidents that have ignited public outrage, including cases of individuals spitting in food and contaminating beverages with urine.

The proposed ordinances, namely the Prevention of False and Anti-Harmony Activities and Spitting Prohibition Ordinance 2024 and the UP Prevention of Contamination in Food (Consumer Right to Know) Ordinance 2024, will introduce stringent penalties for those engaging in such reprehensible acts. The government’s initiative seeks not only to punish offenders but also to empower consumers with the right to know how their food is prepared and handled.

In a key meeting scheduled for Tuesday, CM Adityanath will collaborate with senior officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary for Home Affairs and the Director General of Police, to finalize these Ordinances. This proactive approach aims to enhance food safety standards and strengthen consumer protections across Uttar Pradesh.

Recent incidents have highlighted the urgent need for such measures. In Saharanpur, a viral video showed a teenager spitting on rotis, leading to the immediate arrest of the eatery’s owner. Similarly, two men were detained in Noida for contaminating juice with urine, while a vendor in Ghaziabad faced arrest for allegedly spitting into fruit juice. These incidents prompted Adityanath to express his disgust during a high-level meeting, calling them serious violations of public trust.

As part of the new regulations, all food establishments will be required to prominently display the names and addresses of their operators and managers. Non-compliance will result in substantial penalties, ensuring accountability within the food industry. The ordinances are expected to impose severe consequences for food tampering, ranging from hefty fines to imprisonment.

Adityanath’s commitment to consumer safety extends beyond these ordinances. Recently, he held a ‘Janta Darbar’ at the Gorakhnath temple, where he personally addressed public grievances and instructed officials to resolve issues promptly. This direct engagement with the community underscores his administration’s dedication to transparent and responsive governance.

As Uttar Pradesh moves forward with these groundbreaking Ordinances, the Yogi Adityanath government reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding public health and enhancing consumer rights, setting a precedent for responsible governance in the state.
