After govt’s approval, Justice Khanna will take office as the 51st Chief Justice of India

Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud has officially recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court’s second-most senior judge, as his successor. In a formal communication to the Union government, CJI Chandrachud stated that he would be stepping down on November 10, 2023 and that Justice Khanna should be appointed as the next Chief Justice.

Once the government approves the recommendation, Justice Khanna will take office as the 51st Chief Justice of India. He is expected to serve a tenure of six months, concluding on May 13, 2025, when he will retire.

This recommendation follows the long-standing convention where the retiring Chief Justice nominates the next in seniority for the position. The Union government will subsequently grant its approval.

CJI Chandrachud has been serving since November 9, 2022. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.

He has served on benches that delivered landmark judgments on issues such as the electoral bond scheme verdict, the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, the Sabarimala case, same-sex marriage, and the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. His legal education includes degrees from Delhi University and Harvard University, along with professional experience at Sullivan & Cromwell and the Bombay High Court.

Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, began his legal career after enrolling as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He initially practiced in the district courts at the Tis Hazari complex, later moving on to the Delhi High Court and various tribunals.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge the following year. Justice Khanna ascended to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.

As the judiciary prepares for this transition, all eyes will be on Justice Khanna as he gears up to potentially lead the highest court in the country.
