‘India backs two-state solution in West Asia’: Jaishankar’s ‘fair and durable’ pitch at BRICS

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed growing concerns regarding the Middle East and West Asia during the BRICS Outreach session in Kazan on Thursday. He highlighted the “widespread anxiety” that the ongoing conflict could escalate further, affecting not only regional stability but also maritime trade.

“The situation in the Middle East and West Asia is understandably concerning. There is significant worry that the conflict may spread,” Jaishankar remarked, emphasizing the serious human and material consequences of any further escalation. He reiterated the need for a fair and sustainable approach, advocating for a two-state solution as the pathway forward.

Representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the session, Jaishankar underscored the importance of effectively managing conflicts and tensions. He quoted Modi’s assertion that “this is not an era of war,” insisting that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. “Agreements, once reached, must be scrupulously respected,” he added, calling for strict adherence to international law and zero tolerance for terrorism.

Jaishankar noted that as the global order shifts, BRICS stands as a critical platform that can drive meaningful change. He outlined five key points aimed at creating a more equitable global order:

  • Strengthening Independent Platforms: Expanding platforms that offer choices and reduce dependency.
  • Reforming Global Institutions: Advocating for reforms in established entities like the UN Security Council.
  • Democratizing the Global Economy: Promoting the creation of resilient and efficient supply chains.
  • Improving Global Infrastructure: Enhancing connectivity options to mitigate risks.
  • Sharing Relevant Initiatives: Collaborating on new initiatives of common interest.

Jaishankar also highlighted India’s contributions through its Digital Public Infrastructure, including the Unified Payments Interface and the Gati Shakti initiative, which hold significant relevance for global cooperation. He mentioned other initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as examples of India’s commitment to being a responsible global partner.

The plenary session was attended by leaders from CIS countries and delegations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, as well as heads of international organizations, showcasing the inclusive nature of the BRICS platform in addressing global challenges.
