Bomb threats target major 95 Indian airlines, Aviation authorities respond with tough measures

In a troubling trend, at least 95 flights from major Indian airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet, Alliance Air, and Akasa Air, received bomb threats on Thursday. This incident marks the latest in a series of hoaxes that have impacted more than 250 flights over the past ten days, causing significant disruptions for passengers and creating security challenges for authorities.

Officials reported that the threats were received by 25 Akasa Air flights, 20 each from Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara, and five each from SpiceJet and Alliance Air. Most of these threats have originated from social media platforms, with previous incidents resulting in false alarms that have inconvenienced hundreds of travelers.

In light of the ongoing situation, the government is considering measures to penalize those involved in making hoax bomb threats. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced plans to place individuals making such calls on a no-fly list and indicated that these actions would be classified as cognizable offenses.

The Delhi Police have registered eight cases related to the bomb threats, with investigations revealing that the threatening messages were sent via anonymous posts on social media. These posts have since been suspended by the platforms involved.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) convened a meeting with airline CEOs and representatives in Delhi on October 19 to address the issue. In a recent interview, Minister Naidu acknowledged the government’s efforts to manage the situation and emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway. He refrained from speculating whether the threats were part of a larger conspiracy but urged caution while the investigation continued.

“While many IP addresses linked to these threats may appear foreign, they could easily be rerouted through VPNs, complicating the tracing process,” Naidu explained. He reassured the public that intelligence agencies and relevant departments are actively investigating the threats to ensure safety in Indian airspace.

As investigations continue, the aviation sector remains on high alert, with authorities working diligently to ensure the safety and security of all flights and passengers.
