Authorities launch investigation following discovery of high-value cargo

Pune police made a significant seizure on Friday, recovering gold jewellery valued at a staggering Rs.138 crore from a tempo in the city. The discovery comes as Maharashtra prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections on November 20.

According to officials from the Sahakar Nagar Police, the operation took place at a check-post near the Padmavati complex when officers noticed a suspicious tempo. Upon interception, a thorough search revealed multiple white bags containing boxes filled with glittering gold ornaments.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (II) Smartana Patil provided details to the media, explaining that the driver of the vehicle, registered as MH-02-ER-8112, claimed the consignment had originated from Mumbai and was en route to Pune. While the driver produced paperwork for the cargo, authorities are currently verifying the legitimacy of these documents.

“We have informed the Income Tax Department (ITD) about the seizure, and they are now conducting a full investigation to determine the purpose of the jewellery and its intended recipients,” DCP Patil stated.

This seizure is part of an intensified effort by police to monitor vehicles that may be transporting cash or other valuables that could potentially influence voters during the election period. The police have implemented stringent checks to curb any illegal activities related to the polls.

The recovery of gold ornaments marks the second significant seizure in just five days; on October 21, authorities seized an SUV containing Rs.5 crore in cash near the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza on the Pune-Satara Highway. Smaller amounts of cash have also been reported in similar incidents across the state, raising concerns within political circles.

The ongoing investigations are being conducted by local police, the ITD, and the Election Commission of India, as authorities work to ensure a fair electoral process in Maharashtra.
