Sambhal violence: SP MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq committed ‘provocative acts’, say police

In the aftermath of deadly violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq has been named as the key accused in a police FIR for allegedly inciting a mob and orchestrating the violence that resulted in four deaths. According to the police, Warq’s actions were aimed at disrupting communal harmony for political gain.

The FIR, one of six lodged in connection with the incident, accuses Barq of visiting the Jama Masjid in Sambhal on November 22 without administrative permission, where he incited the crowd after offering prayers. The police allege that Barq made provocative statements, urging the crowd to disturb the peace for political purposes.

The FIR further names Suhail Iqbal, son of local MLA Iqbal Mahmood, and other individuals in the crowd, stating that Iqbal’s son contributed to escalating tensions by rallying support for Barq. “Suhail Iqbal incited the crowd by saying, ‘Zia Ur Rehman Barq is with us, we are also with you. We will not let anything happen to you; fulfill your intentions,'” the FIR claims, noting that these statements led the crowd to become more violent.

Barq has been named Accused No. 1 in the FIR, with Suhail Iqbal listed as Accused No. 2. The complaint also mentions over 700 unidentified individuals who allegedly participated in the violent mob that disrupted a court-ordered survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid. Police say the mob, armed with weapons, attacked officers and attempted to prevent the survey from taking place.

The FIR describes how the mob turned increasingly aggressive, with one individual reportedly firing at Circle Officer Anuj Chaudhary, injuring him in the leg. The report also claims that the mob damaged CCTV cameras, stole weapons from police officers, and launched a violent assault with sticks, stones, and even firearms.

As investigations continue, authorities have filed seven separate FIRs in connection with the violent clashes, which have left local tensions simmering in the region.
