Ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Asaduddin Owaisi‘s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced its first candidate, nominating Tahir Hussain from the Mustafabad constituency. Hussain, a former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor, is currently in jail facing multiple charges related to the 2020 Delhi riots. The decision has sparked strong criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP’s sharp reaction

Reacting to AIMIM’s decision, BJP leader Kapil Mishra launched a scathing attack on Owaisi. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mishra accused Hussain of orchestrating the 2020 Delhi riots.

“The man who conspired to kill hundreds of Hindus in Delhi, whose house was stocked with bombs, stones, and slingshots, and who brutally murdered IB officer Ankit Sharma by stabbing him 400 times before dumping his body in a drain—such a jihadi has been nominated to contest elections. This is a direct challenge to Hindus in Delhi,” Mishra wrote.

He warned of severe consequences if any attempts were made to incite communal violence in Delhi again.

Tahir Hussain joins AIMIM

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed Hussain’s induction into the party, sharing a photo with his family and supporters. “Former MCD councilor Tahir Hussain has joined AIMIM. He will be our candidate from the Mustafabad constituency in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections,” Owaisi posted on X.

Hussain, a former AAP councilor from Nehru Vihar, was expelled from the party after being named in the 2020 Delhi riots case. Following the Delhi Assembly election results in February 2020, riots broke out in parts of northeast Delhi, resulting in several deaths and injuries. Videos of petrol bombs allegedly being thrown from Hussain’s house went viral on social media at the time.

Court’s verdict and legal status

In May this year, a Delhi court granted bail to Hussain in one of the riot-related cases, stating that his alleged involvement appeared to be of a “remote nature.” The court noted that he had already spent more than three years in custody.

However, Hussain remains behind bars due to pending charges in other cases, including conspiracy behind the communal riots and a money laundering case linked to financing the violence. His legal troubles continue, but AIMIM’s decision to field him has stirred a political storm ahead of the elections.
