Unexpected developments engulf Bangladesh at a remarkable speed

Unexpected developments have engulfed Bangladesh with amazing alacrity. In August 2024, then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, dropped a bombshell that a conspiracy was being hatched to carve out a Christian country, taking parts of Bangladesh (Chattogram) and Myanmar with a base in the Bay of Bengal. She was revealing a conspiracy to create a Christian nation “Zogam” for the Zo people. It is said to be on the lines of “Zalengam” [land of freedom], a proposed Kuki State. This separate nation would comprise large parts of Sagaing Division and the Chin state of Myanmar, the Indian state of Mizoram, and Kuki-inhabited areas of Manipur, and the Bandarban district and adjoining areas of Bangladesh’s Chittagong division. Soon, contrived violent student protests, led to the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government and her fleeing to India.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the Chief Adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh. Along with Yunus, 13 additional advisers were sworn in. Expectations were great that Muhammad Yunus, who was sporting a Nobel Laureate tag, would be able to steer the country on the path of development, instead, Bangladesh has been engulfed in an orgy of senseless violence, targeted at minority communities comprising Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and the Islamic caste of Ahmaddiyas. However, Hindus appear to have been bearing the brunt of the demonic violence unleashed by Islamic fundamentalists. Even, organizations like ISKCON, which has been rendering invaluable social service to all sections of society, have seen its Temple located in Meherpur in Bangladesh’s Khulna division, vandalized and set on fire. ISKCON Temple priest Chinmoy Krishna Das has been arrested on undisclosed charges. Every day we see escalating brutal violence in the hapless Hindu community. Inside the country, it is a saga of killing, looting, plundering, abduction of girls and rapes, burning, and destruction. Presiding over this orgy of violence is Muhammad Yunus, who is proudly displaying his fundamentalist colours, and that he is an unworthy recipient of the Nobel prize.

A shocking picture that emerges out of this cataclysm of fundamentalist unleashed violence, is that all the organs of the Bangladeshi government, be it the Judiciary, Army, Police, media, advocates, and bureaucracy, are fully conniving and abetting the ongoing pogrom. The Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, are fully trapped inside Bangladesh, facing savage fundamentalists, who are preventing them from even fleeing to India.

Inside India, Hindus are anguished and keep wondering about the Indian government’s total inaction. People who have witnessed the fiery Israeli response in Gaza, are full of hopes that a similar Indian military blitzkrieg is badly needed as a remedial action. But, one needs to only look at the unending Russia-Ukraine conflict, to realize that, sometimes even a military action can drag on and on. Small nations, armed with drones and suicide bombers, can pose a formidable challenge, even to the most powerful of nations. Perhaps, the government has its reservations, not to embark on a military resolution, to control the fundamentalist forces. What then is the action that the Government of India can take? Can India inflict a ‘peaceful destruction’ on the fundamentalist forces operating inside Bangladesh, that too in a cost-effective manner?

This writer firmly believes that India has the potential and capability to simply cripple Bangladesh, by unleashing a drug war! Yes, a fully clandestine drug war, that is invisible and incomprehensible. India is sitting pretty high on an avalanche of Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Heroin, and Hashish. According to the DRI’s latest “Smuggling in India Report”, released on December 05th, 2024, Cocaine seizures peaked at 107 kilograms, worth Rs.974 crores, Methamphetamine seized totaled 136 kilograms, 49 kilograms of Heroin, and 236 kilograms of Mephedrone. In October 2024, the Delhi and Gujarat police successfully conducted a joint operation, seizing at least 518 kilograms of cocaine worth around Rs.5,000 crore in Gujarat’s Ankleshwar. With this, a total of 1,289 kg of cocaine and 40 kg of hydroponic marijuana, worth over Rs.13,000 crore, have been recovered so far. In addition, Delhi Police recovered another consignment of 200 kilograms of Cocaine. With the combined seizures, Delhi Police has managed to recover over Rs.9,000 crore worth of Colombian cocaine. On November 25th, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard apprehended a huge consignment of around five tonnes of drugs from a fishing boat in the Andaman waters. This is likely to be the biggest-ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard.

Year 2024, alone, saw, law enforcement agencies seizing at least 6,500 kg of drugs, including charas, methamphetamine, morphine, cocaine, marijuana, brown sugar, and mephedrone, with an estimated market value of at least Rs.20,000 crore. This includes a major seizure of 3,300 kg of drugs in the Arabian Sea in February, 518 kg of cocaine worth Rs 5,000 crore seized in Bharuch, 560 kg of cocaine and 40 kg of hydroponic marijuana seized on October 1 from Delhi, 208 kg of cocaine worth Rs.2,080 crore seized on October 10 in Delhi, and 908 kg of mephedrone seized from Bhopal in October.

What an arsenal of drugs is in India’s possession, with zero investment! This writer has long maintained a firm stance against burning and destroying seized drugs. These drugs if stored and preserved can be a boon during any conflict. It is one of the best weapons known to mankind. By enrolling illegal Bangladeshis, Rohingyas, Chakma, and Hajong refugees, staying in India, it is easy game to spread a drug wave across Bangladesh. The fortunes of many of these refugees will get a boost, and it will be a reprieve for the beleaguered Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians of Bangladesh. The rampaging fundamentalist mobs will be subdued into submission within a short span of time.

Drugs can cripple the economy, health, and the social fabric of even the most fundamentalist of nations. Remember, no god can rescue any nation reeling under the scourge of drugs. Could drug wars in Bangladesh be a hidden solution to resolve the fragile “Chicken’s Neck” conundrum that India has been facing? The 60-kilometer long and 22-kilometer wide ‘Siliguri Corridor’ in the Indian state of West Bengal, also known as the “Chicken’s Neck”, connects India’s north-eastern states with the rest of the country. In order to expand the ‘Chicken’s Neck’, India would need to acquire a sizeable chunk of land constituting the Rangpur Division in Bangladesh. This would have been given without hesitation, had India demanded this as a price for its role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. But India’s political leaders lacked the perspicacity to demand this asset. But, the present ongoing pogrom in Bangladesh is a hidden opportunity, to remedy that lapse.

A drug onslaught, surreptitiously launched by India, can be a game changer in strategic relations in South Asia. Muhammad Yunus will find it a very bitter pill to swallow. He will have no alternative, but to admit that, Cocaine is indeed bitter.
