Bashar Al-Assad’s wife Asma battling leukemia has 50% chance of survival: Report

Asma al-Assad, wife of exiled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is reportedly fighting leukemia, a severe and aggressive cancer affecting the bone marrow and blood. According to the report, the British-born former first lady has a 50% chance of survival and is being kept in isolation to reduce the risk of infection while undergoing treatment.

This is not Asma’s first battle with cancer. In 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and declared herself cancer-free after a year of successful treatment. However, the blood cancer is believed to have returned following a period of remission, the report stated.

Born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents, Asma al-Assad holds dual British-Syrian citizenship. She earned degrees in computer science and French literature from King’s College London before pursuing a career in investment banking. In December 2000, she married Bashar al-Assad. The couple has three children: Hafez, Zein, and Karim.

Reports suggest that Asma has sought refuge in London with her children since the start of the Syrian uprising. Speculation also indicates she may have filed for divorce from her husband due to dissatisfaction with their life in Moscow. However, the Kremlin dismissed these claims, saying, “No, they do not correspond to reality.”

Asma is also alleged to have applied to a Russian court for special permission to leave the country. This application is reportedly under review by Russian authorities.

Bashar al-Assad fled Syria with his family on December 8, following an 11-day rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). His departure marked the culmination of years of civil war, which erupted after his violent crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011. The conflict has resulted in over 500,000 deaths and displaced more than half of Syria’s population.

Now living under asylum in Moscow, Bashar al-Assad faces significant restrictions imposed by Russian authorities. While his asylum request was approved, he is barred from leaving Moscow or engaging in political activities. Reports also claim that his assets have been frozen, although the Kremlin denies these allegations.
