India has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus originating from China, in an eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru. The confirmation came from a private hospital. The state health department confirmed that it did not test the sample in its own labs but stated that it has no reason to doubt the private hospital’s findings.

“The reports have come from a private hospital, and we have no reason to question the accuracy of their tests,” a health department source said.

This marks the first reported case of HMPV in the country.

What is the HMPV virus?

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common respiratory virus that affects people of all ages, though it poses a greater risk to the elderly and young children. The virus spreads through contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include:

• Sore throat

• Fatigue
• Cough
• Fever or chills

India’s response to the HMPV outbreak

In response to HMPV cases reported in China and now in India, the Ministry of Health has ramped up monitoring and preparedness efforts:

• Laboratory Expansion: Increased number of labs for testing HMPV cases.
• ICMR Monitoring: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will track HMPV trends throughout the year.
• Global Coordination: India has requested timely updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the virus.

Joint monitoring group meeting

A joint monitoring group (JMG) meeting was held, chaired by the Directorate General of Health Services, to discuss the HMPV situation. Attendees included experts from:

• WHO
• Disaster Management Cell
• Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP)
• National Center for Disease Control (NCDC)
• AIIMS Delhi
• ICMR and other key agencies.

The group concluded that while the HMPV outbreak in China aligns with the flu season, the situation is not unusual. Nevertheless, vigilance remains high to prevent any potential spread.

India on alert

India continues to monitor the situation closely, with the health ministry emphasizing the importance of preparedness and awareness. With the first case reported, authorities aim to stay ahead of the virus to protect vulnerable populations.
