Hampi gang-rape: Brutal assault shocks Karnataka, police launch manhunt for suspects

A shocking crime has emerged from Hampi, Karnataka, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where two women, including an Israeli tourist, were gang-raped, and three male tourists were brutally assaulted before being thrown into a canal. The incident, which took place on Thursday night near Sanapur Lake, resulted in the death of a tourist from Odisha, whose body was recovered on Friday morning.

Attack near Sanapur Lake

According to police sources, the victims—a 27-year-old Israeli woman, a 29-year-old homestay owner, and three male tourists from Odisha, Maharashtra, and the United States—were sitting by Sanapur Lake, a popular tourist spot located 4 km from Hampi, enjoying music and stargazing when the attack occurred between 11:00 PM and 11:30 PM.

Three bike-borne assailants approached them, pretending to ask for petrol. When the homestay operator informed them that there was no fuel station nearby, they demanded money. When the tourists refused, the men turned violent, physically assaulting them and pushing the three male tourists into the Tungabhadra canal. Two of them managed to escape, but one, identified as Bboss from Odisha, drowned.

The two women were gang-raped before the assailants fled the scene.

Victims seek help, one tourist dies

After the attack, two of the male tourists, Pankaj from Maharashtra and Daniel from the US, managed to escape the canal and sought medical help. However, Deboss from Odisha went missing, prompting a large-scale search operation by police, fire department officials, and dog squads. His body was later found in the canal, confirming that he had drowned.

Complaint and investigation

The female homestay owner later filed a police complaint, revealing that the attackers spoke Kannada and Telugu. They first demanded Rs.100 from the group and became aggressive when refused. During the assault, they threw the three men into the canal and then raped both women while the victims were helplessly struggling in the water.

Police response and FIR filed

A case has been registered at the Gangavathi Rural Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

• Section 309(6) – Theft or extortion
• Section 311 – Robbery with intent to cause death or serious injury
• Section 64 – Rape
• Section 70(1) – Gang rape
• Section 109 – Attempt to murder

With the confirmation of Deboss’ death, murder charges will also be added.

Police hunt for attackers

A special police team has been deployed to track down the three unidentified suspects, and security has been tightened around Hampi. Authorities are actively searching for leads to ensure justice for the victims.
