Policy reversal: Trump to resume military aid and intelligence sharing

In a major policy shift, US President Donald Trump is reportedly set to lift the ban on military aid and intelligence support for Ukraine following a last-minute appeal by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Trump had previously suspended all military assistance and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv, barring even US allies like the UK from providing intelligence to Ukraine as it continues its war against Russia.

Starmer’s appeal to Trump

As per Mirror UK, Starmer personally spoke to Trump for 20 minutes before the upcoming peace talks in Saudi Arabia, urging him to reinstate intelligence-sharing and military aid.

A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed Starmer’s efforts:

The Prime Minister said he hoped there would be a positive outcome to the talks that would enable US intelligence to be restarted.”

Additionally, Starmer is preparing to host a new coalition of nations willing to help protect Ukraine post-peace deal. Addressing the Parliamentary Labour Party, he highlighted the urgency of the situation:

The real world is moving quickly, and people look to their government to seize it and shape it for the benefit of the British people.”

He further reiterated that the security of Ukraine is vital for Europe, stating:

Our support for Ukraine is unwavering. Our defence and security must come first. That is what we owe to the British people.”

Saudi peace talks and potential conditions on aid

Ahead of the crucial peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed cautious optimism, stating:

I hope we can resolve the pause in aid. What happens today will be key to that.”

However, Rubio also hinted that the resumption of US support would come with conditions, suggesting that Ukraine might need to make territorial concessions to Russia as part of a broader peace agreement.

Ukraine must be prepared to do difficult things, like the Russians will,” Rubio remarked.

Escalation: Ukraine’s massive drone attack on Russia

In a significant military escalation, Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Russia ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with US officials in Saudi Arabia.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that its air defence forces destroyed 337 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 91 of them over Moscow.

Casualties & Disruptions:

  • At least one person was killed and three injured in the attacks.
  • Russia’s aviation authority suspended flights at Moscow’s four main airports, along with two regional airports in Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod.

Ukraine’s approach to peace talks

Ahead of the talks in Saudi Arabia, Zelensky pledged a “fully constructive” stance, seeking “practical outcomes” to end the war with Russia.

His delegation, led by Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials in Jeddah today.

Rubio reiterated that both Ukraine and Russia must make difficult compromises, stating:

There’s no military solution. Neither side can fully achieve its goals.”

As diplomatic discussions unfold, Ukraine remains hopeful for renewed US support, while Russia continues to face increasing military pressure from Ukraine’s latest offensives.
