Financial fraud, black magic allegations surface after forensic audit

The Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMMT), which operates Mumbai’s renowned Lilavati Hospital, has filed multiple complaints with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Bandra Police Station, alleging the misappropriation of over Rs.1,500 crore by former trustees and related individuals.

According to news agency PTI, the trust has also accused former trustees of performing black magic on hospital premises. The allegations surfaced following a forensic audit of financial records, which reportedly uncovered significant financial misconduct.

Fraud and black magic allegations lead to criminal complaints

As per LKMMT Permanent Resident Trustee Prashant Mehta, the trust has pursued legal action based on court directives:

We filed complaints that resulted in FIRs due to orders from the Bandra Magistrate Court. More than three FIRs have been registered against former trustees and related individuals. A fourth proceeding is now pending before the magistrate, based on our complaint regarding black magic and occult practices inside the hospital.”

Mehta emphasized the trust’s commitment to ensuring healthcare funds are used solely for patient care and described the alleged financial misconduct as a betrayal of the hospital’s mission.

Forensic audit uncovers financial irregularities

The current trustees initiated a forensic audit after regaining control of the trust following a lengthy legal battle. They appointed Chetan Dalal Investigation and Management Services and ADB & Associates as forensic auditors.

The audit findings reportedly revealed that:

  • Over Rs.1,500 crore was siphoned and misappropriated by former trustees.
  • Most of the accused trustees are NRIs, residing in Dubai and Belgium.
  • A specific FIR alleges Rs.1,200 crore was misused through illegal dealings with third-party distributors for hospital procurements.

The Bandra Police Station has registered three complaints concerning forgery and fund misappropriation, which have been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for investigation.

Additionally, an Rs.85 crore fraud case was registered against three former trustees on December 30, 2023. The complaint alleges that between 2002 and 2023, the accused:

  • Used forged documents to gain control of the trust.
  • Diverted Rs.85 crore for personal legal fees and expenses, falsely claiming it was for medical equipment purchases.

A separate case is under investigation in Gujarat, concerning the theft of valuables from a hospital facility in the state.

Black magic claims: Urns with human hair and skulls found

In a shocking revelation, Mehta stated that forensic investigators found more than seven urns containing human hair and skulls within the hospital premises, reinforcing black magic allegations.

ED involvement sought

The trust has formally requested the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the financial crimes under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

We are committed to holding all individuals involved in these illegal activities accountable and ensuring that healthcare funds are used for their intended purpose,” Mehta affirmed.

With multiple cases under investigation and forensic evidence revealing large-scale financial irregularities, the future of Lilavati Hospital’s administration remains under intense scrutiny.
