Early morning blast reported outside BJP leader’s home

A blast occurred outside the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoranjan Kalia in Jalandhar, Punjab, during the early hours of Tuesday. Authorities were informed around 1 a.m., prompting an immediate response from police and forensic teams.

Kalia confirmed to the media that he initially mistook the sound for thunder. He later dispatched his gunman to the local police station after being informed of the explosion. “There was a blast at around 1 a.m. I thought it was thunder, but later, I found out it was a blast. The CCTV footage is being reviewed, and forensic experts are on site,” he stated.

Police and forensics begin investigation

Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur visited the site and confirmed that authorities were examining CCTV footage and exploring all possible causes, including whether it was a grenade attack. “We reached the location immediately and began an investigation. The forensic team is analyzing the evidence to determine the nature of the blast,” she said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Manpreet Singh reiterated that the forensic team would inspect the site and submit a detailed report.

Previous incidents of explosives in Punjab

Punjab has witnessed several explosive-related incidents in recent months:

• In March, four people, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly throwing a grenade at a Jalandhar-based YouTuber’s residence. The main accused, Amritpreet Singh, sustained injuries during a police encounter.
• In another case, two masked individuals hurled explosives outside Thakur Dwara Temple in Amritsar’s Khandwala area. The explosion caused property damage but no casualties.
• Between November 2024 and February 2025, ten explosions have been reported outside various police buildings across Punjab.

Security measures and ongoing iInquiry

Security around Kalia’s residence has been tightened. Forensic teams are still collecting samples, and investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators. Officials have not yet confirmed the type of explosive used.
